“I wish to exceed all my notions of what I think possible. I want to reach out with pen in hand, perhaps a well placed finger on my chin, and finally grasp the unknowable. The Farthest Reaches.”
I expect I’m not the only blogger or writer struggling to make ends meet. I imagine there’s a lot of us out there writing between shifts, and in late and early hours just to say our piece.
I wanted to get back in to writing in a big way not that I had ever stopped, but I found my self stalling in my creative endeavours. I hadn’t been writing any new music, poems, or stories. I was living in the small town of Listowel, Ontario where I didn’t know a soul.
The scenario of being in a new place and not knowing anyone has been my life on a loop for the past five years. I was working afternoons every week night and some weekends, so I wasn’t able to go out on Friday night and meet new people. I didn’t have the time or energy for the people I knew. I started losing interest in things I previously enjoyed and drinking more and more. Old habits die-hard.
I’ve always loved reading and watching books and films in the sci-fi and fantasy genres. I wasn’t certain my stuff particularly fit in to sci-fi or fantasy but I thought if I created a space I would fill it with the most imaginative works of my writing career.
My stories didn’t have any cohesive or unifying thread, that I’m aware of, except that they all came from the same source. I was writing a story called the Great Beyond, which I might finish some day, but in it there’s a chapter about a distant planet.
I like the idea of trying to reach a place so impossibly remote and I can’t think of a nobler goal for a writer or for a human being. I wish to exceed all my notions of what I think possible. I want to reach out with pen in hand, perhaps a well placed finger on my chin, and finally grasp the unknowable. The Farthest Reaches.
The Farthest Reaches launched in July 2015 with the goal of sharing insights and stories about the universe we live in, the art we make and the vibrant cultures that have evolved.
